Michel TIRABOSCO was born in Rome and grew up in an artistically minded family. He started playing the panpipes at the age of 7 and at 20 was the first ever to obtain a certificate for transverse flute with panpipes with congratulations from the jury. He continued studying at the Geneva Music Academy (Conservatoire Supérieur), graduating with a Diploma of Musical Culture (harmony, orchestration, composition) and obtaining the prize of the State Council. He gave his first concert with a symphonic orchestra at the age of 16.

At 18, Michel Tirabosco made his first recording together with the French guitarist, Lucien Battaglia. The press acclaimed him as the young prodigy of panpipes. Around the same time he embarked on a solo career playing alongside such artists of repute as the cellist, Christian Benda, the comedian, Jean-Luc Bideau and Marcel Cellier, George Zamfir’s producer.

At 20, he recorded a CD with André Luy, organist at Lausanne cathedral, and at the age of 22, another CD with the famous harpist, Chantal Mathieu. Together with the Argentine pianist, Miguel Angel Estrella, he then went on tour of South America and Europe. He was regularly invited to the Château of Bourglinster (Luxemburg) to play in the presence of the Grand Duke. He was also chosen to give the final concert at the “Queen Marie-José of Italy” competition for composers.

At the age of 25 he toured the United States, giving 12 concerts, including one of the prestigious Myra Hess concerts in Chicago. In 1998 the Orchestra of the European Communities invited him to play Mozart’s Concerto for Flute, Harp and Orchestra in Turkey, a concerto he gave again with the Neuchâtel Chamber Orchestra. Since 2000 the well-known concert agency, Hörtnagel, has invited him several times to perform in Munich and Nuremberg. Propelled on to the international scene he has taken part in numerous concerts and festivals around the globe. Michel has a great passion for the theatre, and he discovered the world of the stage by performing The Last Concert 17 times at the Théâtre Pitoëff in Geneva with the Michel Tirabosco Trio.

Michel Tirabosco was keen to expand the repertoire for panpipes, so he commissioned several concertos. The composer, Bernard Schulé, dedicated a first concerto to Michel who performed it under the direction of the conductor Michel Tabachnik. He helped the composer René Oberson by finishing a second concerto for panpipes. In 2007 he recorded a third concerto for panpipes written by David Chappuis with the Symphonic Orchestra of Volgograd (Russia). Also in 2007 the Rotary Club of France unanimously nominated him Golden Talent of the Year. In March 2010, together with the Chamber Orchestra of Fribourg, he performed a fourth concerto by Dominique Gesseney. In 2011 he will record a fifth with the Orchestra of Lugano. To date, Michel Tirabosco has recorded 15 CDs.

Playing music is truly a way of life for Michel, as he considers music to be an intrinsic quest for himself. He is fascinated by tone and constantly strives to achieve perfect equilibrium between technique, musicality and bodily harmony.
